When children join a school or college in the UK, their previous reports and certificates help teachers understand what they have studied and how they were doing. Reports from Iran, Afghanistan and the Kurdistan Region are usually translated into English for this.

Documents worth translating

  • end-of-year report cards, showing subjects and grades
  • certificates for completing primary, lower secondary or upper secondary school
  • transcripts for older students applying to a college
  • letters from the previous school about attendance, behaviour or special educational needs

How grades are shown

Iranian schools mark out of 20, and other school systems use their own scales. The translation keeps every mark exactly as written, and a short translator’s note can explain the scale. It does not convert marks into UK grades: schools and colleges make their own judgement, and for a formal comparison of qualifications, UK ENIC is the official source.

Certified or not?

Many schools are happy with an accurate translation, while colleges, universities and councils sometimes ask for a certified translation. Ask the school, or the council’s admissions team, which they need before you order.
